Orientation Answers

Several questions were asked at the first new member orientation that we needed to research. Answers in quotes are from Eve, the farmer.

Thanks given to Gina, volunteer core member, for doing the finding the answers.

Q: Do the chickens get GMO feed?
A: Short answer: No. Long answer: I gave incorrect information at the meeting. The chickens are now getting organic feed! Here's more information from Eve: "We are feeding organic feed now. That is part of the reason that the price went up so much last year, when we switched. we spent $35,000 on OG chickenfeed last year!" In case it's not obvious, the organic feed is non-GMO.

Q: What were the pricing equivalents of the veggies distributed last year?
A: "The info on actual shares from past years now has its own web page"

Q: Can you give me information about farm visits?
A: "We will have about 1 farm visit per month. If you want to give us feedback about the best dates for you (or your group) that would be good, we haven't selected dates yet. Potentials are: July 12, 19, 26, Aug 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, Sept 13 is a definite, Sept 26-27 is our Garlic Festival, and in Oct we will have a gleaning event."

Q: Who is the membership coordinator of the East 4th St. Community Garden?
A: Kris Keller,

Q: What is the cost of two half shares?
A: If you purchase two half shares, so that you'll get a full dozen eggs every other week, you will be charged the price of a full share of eggs: $65. This is $5 less than the price of two half shares.

Important information: I mentioned in the meeting that we would have the opportunity to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys. Someone else mentioned that they read on the Garden of Eve website that they lost all of their turkeys last year in a fire. I [Gina] asked Eve about that, and she replied, "We will hopefully never raise turkeys commercially again. What a nightmare."
